Contemporary architecture merges different cultures and architectural traditions. It is resulted in a mix of different architectural languages ​​and diverse perceptions of the space. It cannot be defined through a single style since it is characterized by an unconventional nature, detached from the past. Contemporary architecture is the result of a mix of different languages ​​in terms of contents, concepts, materials, and even the perception of space itself. 

There are different representative architects and designers with heterogeneous languages. Sometimes, these languages find inspiration in the cultural traditions while, in other cases, contemporary architectural lexicons express a sharp contrast from local and historical building traditions.

From the combination of different architectural languages, deeply influenced by the digital workflows, new ways of architectural design - no longer based on Euclidean spatial concepts – arise.

Another key element of contemporary architecture is sustainability. The use of recycled and natural materials and the attention to water and temperature control systems are increasingly included and considered in architectural design.

The focus of the publication aims at exploring the contemporary lexicon in the architecture and engineering field as well as in all those fields where this topic can generate meaningful visions.

Indeed, contemporary heritage can be interpreted through new lenses considering the opportunities provided by digital tools, which allow new formal, aesthetic, and structural visualization, thus providing new ways of analysis and study.

The book aims to present examples and studies ranging from different fields related to the contemporary architectural heritage, focusing on the design of forms, the representation of textures, the construction associated with the technical-structural evolution of coatings, and the history of construction and the restoration of the contemporary heritage. 

Further, the call is addressed to broader themes associated with the contemporary lexicon, ranging from fashion to design.

The publication intends to become a guide that illustrates the most recent studies that define the contemporary heritage lexicon.

L’architettura contemporanea è definita dall’incontro tra culture e tradizioni architettoniche diverse. È quindi il risultato di un mix di linguaggi differenti in termini di contenuti, concetti, materiali e perfino di percezione stessa dello spazio. Sicuramente l’architettura contemporanea non possiamo definirla attraverso un unico stile, ma è caratterizzata dall’essere anticonvenzionale rompendo con il passato. Troviamo esponenti diversi tra loro e linguaggi eterogenei e lontanissimi, talora rivolti alle tradizioni culturali di appartenenza. Altre volte sembra che i linguaggi cerchino una loro completa autonomia, pur partendo da premesse comuni, per esprimere un contrasto. Dall'incontro di questi linguaggi diversi, e senz’altro grazie al digitale, è nato un nuovo modo di progettare la spazialità architettonica, non più basata sui concetti euclidei, ma totalmente libera, anche grazie alla disponibilità di materiali e metodi di costruzione innovativi.

Altra caratteristica dell’architettura contemporanea è la sostenibilità. L'uso di materiali riciclati e naturali e l'attenzione ai sistemi di controllo dell'acqua e della temperatura sempre più perfettamente integrati e considerati. 

Il focus della pubblicazione intende esplorare, quindi, il lessico contemporaneo non solo nel campo dell’architettura e dell’ingegneria, ma in tutti quegli ambiti dove questo tema può essere letto con una visione significativa.

Riteniamo, infatti, che il periodo contemporaneo possa essere interpretato tramite nuove modalità di lettura legate alle possibilità offerte dal digitale, sia formali ed estetiche che strutturali e di fornire altre modalità di studio. 

Lo spirito del libro è quello di presentare esempi e studi che spazieranno in diversi campi del patrimonio architettonico contemporaneo, con focus sul disegno delle forme, sulla rappresentazione delle trame, sulla costruzione in relazione all’evoluzione tecnico-strutturale dei rivestimenti, sulla storia della costruzione, sul restauro del contemporaneo, fino ad allargarsi a temi più ampi del lessico contemporaneo che vanno dalla moda al design.
